STRATEGIC FOCUS OF THE ARBORETUM

By its very definition, the Arboretum is supporting the Trinidad and Tobago Government’s efforts aimed at reducing the country’s carbon foot print and is in keeping with the United Nations, Global Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), and specifically, Goal 15, which is to; Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.  

The Arboretum is therefore essential in assisting Trinidad and Tobago in meeting the UN’s SDG goals.  

The Arboretum is being developed and promoted as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) for the purpose of fostering environmental conservation of indigenous flora and fauna in Trinidad and Tobago. Various species of plants, trees, flowers and horticulture will be developed/cultivated to support research, educational, environmental conservation, health and wellness and other complementing activities.  

The aims of the organization is for public enjoyment and knowledge of agriculture and horticulture cultivation and collection and to secure the country’s sustainable future. This is being done by engaging, informing/educating and increasing visitors to the Arboretum.

MANDATE

The mandate of the NPO is to pursue its sustainability and to support the
Trinidad and Tobago Government’s SDG agenda with respect to environmental conservation.

VISION

The Vision of the Arboretum/NPO is to be the Caribbean leader in sustainable environmental conservation and biodiversity.

MISSION

The Mission is to secure its commercial sustainability through business development initiatives and to partner with collaborators to increase their knowledge and instigate actions in tree cultivation, educational research and environmental conservation by seeking technical and financial support from the local, international, regional donor community.

GOVERNANCE

Governance within the Arboretum/NPO is established through a Board and Management structures.

THE BOARD

The Board of Directors is constituted with a minimum of five and maximum of seven members. These should collectively have expertise in Business Maanagement, Finance, Agriculture/Horticulture, Education and Research in the fields of Agriculture/Horticulture, Tourism and relevant experience to contribute to the vision and strategic direction of the NPO.
